The person who was looking after our Whatsup server has been let go.  Upon investigation of this server it appears it does not always page 3 pages that are tied to an up or down.

Here is what is in the Action log.

Mark PagerWednesday, June 08, 2005 01:32:39 PMfailurexxxxxx   Pager Action was NOT successful.

Jeremy PagerWednesday, June 08, 2005 01:31:34 PMsuccessxxxxx   Pager Action was successful

Mark PagerWednesday, June 08, 2005 01:30:48 PMretryxxxx   Pager Action could not run because the modem port is being used. Retry count = 2 The action will retry in 60000 milliseconds
Jim PagerWednesday, June 08, 2005 01:30:32 PMsuccessxxxxx   Pager Action was successful.

I did a test of doing an individual page and it takes about 43-45 seconds from start to finish.  Could WUP be trying the next page inline before the other has finished?  I need to find a solution to this.

Anyone have any Ideas?

Jim

The log is showing you a report of what happened, what is in the Action Policy?

Break it out and look at each action within the policy. Double check the black out period and check that the UP actions are dependent on a down state (like 5 mins down).

Thanks,

Jason

The Pager events are depending on being down for 5 minutes  there are 3 pager actions, 3 email actions

To me it seems either WUP is not releasing the modem fast enough,  is there a way to delay each call out via pager, or change the retry interval.

I can confirm this. I also use multiple pagers and I did notice the same behaviour. Sometimes a couple retries were needed, but so far every page was successfully sent out. Therefore I did not bother this any longer, but kept in mind. It would be nice to tweak WhatsUp, so Log keeps clear of errors.

What bothers me far more, is that it's not possible to change the caller number for a couple of pager alerts at one single place. A have several pager actions for a couple of groups ...

Daniel

Ya sometimes they all eventually go out, but there have been times when everyone else got paged but me (we have 3 pagers on each device)  and I was actually on call and never got the page, which is a bad thing. We also use SMS as well on the same server.[

I wish there was a way to try indefinately or something like there is with SMS settings

May I ask a strategic question: why do you also page people not having stand by duty?

Not sure about his reasons, but for me, its simple..

Possible reasons:

1. Developers need to know when problems occur to quickly fix P.o.S. issues

2. Managers want to know EVERYTHING that happens

3. Backup for the on-call guy. (sometimes, this is helpfull!)

there are more, im sure, but these are some weve used!

Exactly what Don Said.

We have always done it this way and never really had a problem (until now)

We do it as a backup, incase one person does not hear the page, the page does not go thorugh etc.  When I am not on call I want to know if there is problems as well so I can assist if necessary.
