Whooooah neddy... I am gonna have to put the brakes on this one...

I am using Orion in conjunction with WUP because the do very slighty different things....

Orion

Pros - Great website system for monitoring SNMP enabled devices in a nice map based view which is customisable and easy to setup reports.  Easy to setup monitoring of CPU, disk and memory usage with full notification options available (note- they have just implemented syslog tool but I have not tested as of yet)

Cons - No custom MIB support so you have to rely on the next release for any missing devices, no support for service monitoring (i.e. webpages, NT services, FTP, etc) no ability to monitor custom MIB properties (ie temp, humidity, etc)

WUP

Pros - Fully customisable SNMP support with custom MIB capability, ability to monitor NT services and other TCP/SNMP based services.  Fully implemented syslog, windows log and snmptrap capabilities.

Cons - not as pretty or as intuative to setup as Orion and reporting tool is very light and has no ability for the user to create custom reports.

Summary

So there are my 2 cents.... altho WUP will actually do what Orion does it is far trickier to implement as I had the basic Orion framework completed in less than half a day... however Orion has no support for Service level monitoring or ability to monitor TCP ports and websites etc.... I am using both tools on the same server to cover all aspects of monitoring (Orion is the promary web site with WUP visible through a custom asp page).

Orion - SNMP monitoring of device availability, network links, cpu, disk, memory usage, LAN/WAN utilisation, etc

WUP - Availability of NT services, TCP/IP port based services, webpages, custom MIB items (ie temperature monitoring devices and UPS's)

Hope that helps clarifyand makes someone at IPSwitch a bit happier

Thanks for the breakdown of the 2 products "mjhamitton"

I want to also mention that our Getting started guide has portion in Chapter 9 that deals with creating custom reports:

It does require a bit of knowledge of ASP and SQL.

However I can also tell you that we are looking at the various reporting suggestions that users have expressed interest in.

I would also like to add my comment here...

I have used What's Up GOLD for quite a long time. It was a "perfect" system, in the sense that it did everything it was supposed to do. period. You could not easily do MORE or do DIFFERENT things.

WUP is in my opinion COMPLETELY different. It lacks some functionality that we had in GOLD, but it is soooo much more extendable. You can play with the database, you can play with the web site, you can write plugins (this was also *in theory* possible with GOLD but the half-page of documentation was so awful that it was almost impossible, while the WUP SDK is a GREAT product).

My opinion is that in some respects, WUP is getting a bit closer to more sophisticated products like HP openview or Tivoli ---while not as complicated though.

So you CAN do a lot with WUP out-of-the-box, but you also CAN extend it a lot.

I think that most of the discussions about WUP/WUG still are a matter of personal taste. I see many people complaining about reporting in WUP. Well I can tell you that NONE OF MY CUSTOMERS liked the WUG reports... They would simply throw them away... So what ? Personal taste.

For me, bottom line is : if you are aware of what WUP can do out of the box, buy it. If you are willing to do MORE with the basis of a robust polling engine, buy WUP. If you want MORE OUT OF THE BOX, try another product.

Reading, writing and arithmetic - If you need to choose, please take option 1.

If your DB isn't on a SQL server--move it.  Then you'll be able to produce reports until you're blue in the face.  Maybe this is true even with DB under MSDE--I just don't have experience with that environment.

Also, as mentioned in a previous reply to your post there is some good info in the documentation to help you get started as well.

Hope this helps.
