After noticing that not many emails are being sent from Whats Up I had a look at the server and realised that the WhatsUp Engine had stopped.

This happens atleast once a day.
Even on a restart the service does not start.

I looked in the Event Log and this is logged.

Service terminating. Error=80004005
ErrorMessage=Unspecified error
Description=[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Cannot open database requested in login 'WhatsUp'. Login fails.

This started happening as soon as I updated to SP1.
We are not using WhatsUp with SQL Server, we're using the MSDE install.

What exactly does it mean and how do I fix it?

I have a similar issue.... can you check task manager on your server and look for the service NMService.exe...

Watch the memory usage for this applet... mine gradually rises with users accessing the website and the console... memory is grabbed and never released...

When left over night by the time the next day has come the WUP Pro application has fallen over and required a stop/start and the sequence starts again..

I think it is a memory leak in one of the new dll's posted by SP1... the other day this NMService.exe application was using 1.2G on RAM..

Lost in a sea of snmp.....

I'm having similar issues as well- I have a support ticket in with Ipswitch about it, but so far I haven't heard anything back from them. If I find out anything, I'll post it here. One thing I did notice is that when you repair SP1 (just run the installer again), it'll start the service the first time you restart, but every subsequent time it fails to start on its own. That seems to be the most prevalent error-- either that, or I get the sql error mentioned above. It seems like SP1 may have come out of the cooker a little too early :-(
