I applied SP1 and everything appeared to be fine until I noticed a couple things:

  • Why are certain machines in bold?
  • There are now machines I can not access any longer via WhatsUp to monitor NT services.  I even delete the machine and readd it, and it can not discovery services on the box.  I get Win32 errors when trying to access certain machines when I try to re-add the services.

The first version, despite missing certain key components worked fine - now the product doesn't even work.

As I mentioned in the other thread, there are some big problems with the new version. As far as i can see, i would not recommend to install sp1.

Too late!  Now when I try to check a service on a problem box, I get "failed to connect to device; class not registered".  Yet I can access this box with no problems via computer mangement.  SP1 just messed me up.

Alex,

The bold devices are in need of "Acknowledgement."   That is they have experienced a state change.  You can clear by selecting one or more devices and right clicking and selecting "acknowledge."   This is in response to requests of users of WhatsUp Gold which had an acknowledge feature.  It alerts you to the fact that a device may be up now, but went down at some point while you were away.

The under the hood communications between devices have been changed to WMI.  This should be an improvement but may cause some pain in getting configured correctly.

Hope this helps.

I was faced with the same problem with the NT Service monitor and all I did was put the correct credentials in there and that seems to fix the problem.  Make sure the credentials you pick domain\username have local admin power to the box and especially to the service you try to monitor.

Hope this helps.

I posted this in another thread.  On the NT 4 service checks:

Since NT 4 did have WMI installed by default, that may be why the NT 4 service checks are failing. Follow this KB article to download WMI for NT from the Microsoft site:

I am having an access denied message on service status polling.  I created a new active monitor using a domain admin ID to get the service name and then used the same ID to connect to the server in the active monitor and it fails to get the state due to "access denied" error.  Anyone else have this issue and is there a resolution?

I found the problem with the access denied error - DNS resolution on the monitored device back to the WhatUp Pro server was not resolving properly and the Kerbos Key failed because of it.  I clear the DNS cache and this resolved the problem.

This makes no sense.  I have full domain privleges and I can sucessfully manage this machine accessing all its services via standard Microsoft computer manager, yet WhatsUp tells me this:

"NT Service Check (BlackBerry Server Service) for 172.16.1.154
ServiceDisplayName=BlackBerry Server
ServiceInternalName=BlackBerry Server

Username=<domain>\*****

Failed to connect to 172.16.1.154. User=<domain>\**** Error=Access is denied."

(FYI: I added the astericks for the user account & domain...)

I flushed the DNS, rebooted the WhatsUp box, and even went so far to reboot the Blackberry server.  Yet I can not access this box to monitor the services.  Is this a WMI problem with WhatsUp accessing this?
