I am trying to get some sort of feeling for the requirements of the server that I will need to run over 10 000 - 200 000 users.

Can somebody please give some suggestions with this on solutions that are currently running.

Please give details into format below :-

No. of users :

Server Spec's :

- Operating System:

- RAM :

- Disk Space :

- RAID :

- CPU :

Using:

- iMail

- IM

etc.

Greatly appreciated.

Michael Sandell.

10000 or 200000 users? It's not really the same ;-)

Fortunately IMail, ICS now, needs not a lot of resources.

One aspect is AntiVirus and AntiSpam. Do you have a separate Gateway for this work?

10000 users on one box is not a real problem. For realibilty reasons, i would setup more boxes,if you have more than 50000 users. But this is a matter of taste and budget.

I would prefer a configuration like this:
a double CPU >2 GHz with 2 GB RAM. SCSI is not needed. S-ATA is fast and cheap. At least one 2 Channel RAID-Controller with two pairs of disk (Drive C, D) configured as RAID1. 200 GB Disks are quite cheap right now. RAID5 might be an option, needs more budget...

For a big installation, i would install two RAID Controllers. A third pair of disk should be reserved for the Spool/Log exclusively. Don't forget to buy a very good disk defragmenter, like O&O defrag.

Keep the Mail server dedicated. Do not use IIS, PHP, etc. to keep the load down.

you should use the 10,000rpm sata drives for the spool&log drives if you are running 200,000+ users. and I would definitaly second the good defragger program requirment.

10k users is not much at all.
