we were notifed that an account was sending large amounts of relayed spam via our smtp servers, come to find out, they were using the disabled root account which had a week password, had to change password on all the root accounts to something off the wall as this account isn't used for anything...

But, why would SMTPD Authorize a mail sender on a Disabled Account? Shouldn't "Disabled" mean: NO ACCESS ?????

 

 

Problem was in both the old v8.22, and v10.0 upgrade.

Can you please tell me exactly how your root user is configured? We have attempted to duplicate this issue on multiple versions and have not been able to do so. Please note that suspending an account only applies to web access. Unchecking "Grant account access" is the only way to completely disable an account.

You should probably change the passwords for all accounts, especially any unused accounts. I had the same issue and noticed they had access to a differant account too.
