When I attempt to search the inbox of a user while logged in to the web messaging UI, I see an option of "date within: of."

My question is, why has there not been a combo box or date selector to indicate the date? It is such an inconvenience to have to enter the date manually with the mm/dd/yyyy mask. Can I enter a value like "today" in that field?

No you can't enter Today for that field.  You have to specify an actual date.  I agree that the field should be some sort of date picker control and will see about getting that change made for you. Unfortunately, even if I change it today you won't see it until the release that comes after 10.01. In the meantime though, if you are familar with html and javascript, you can probably alter the page yourself and add a date picker.  There are many javascript ones available for free online.
