Hello, Help
This is the message I get when I try to connect to my host pages:
Finding Host ftp.tripod.com ...
Address lookup of "ftp.tripod.com" failed. It may be misspelled, or your computer may not be connected to the network or Internet.
Also check that your DNS and local name servers are properly configured and responding.

I have checked spelling, address', I have a internet access, not dial up, I copied all info from my old computer when I was using Ipswitch 95? program, now I downloaded the WS_FTP Home to try out before I bought it, last one I had was free. My Firewall is turned off. what else do I need to do, in details would be helpful. I believe I have checked everything after viewing notes online here.
Do I need a license for the try out?
Hope someone can help me ! thanks
Debbie

Hi. Your ftp address works. I'm able to hit it.

I think your statement that you "copied" everything from your previous system may be the clue. Can you elaborate further. Is this an FTP client? Did you install a new client onto the new system and copy the site address info, or did you copy all the ftp client working files onto your new system?

Hi Rick,

I have installed only a new download "WS_FTP Home" from the Ipswitch home pages to my new computer. To try out first, I haven't paid for it yet. I don't have a license for the program so when I first open up the program I check mark the Activate later to use WS FTP Home without activating for the duration of the evaluation period - 30 days.
I had written down the hostnames, host type, my user ID and passwords for each web page on paper only. Then I used the wizard in this program to create the one for my tripod web site. Plus I went online to each homepages to double check I had their correct ftp address.
I didn't copy any files at all from old to new computer.
Hope this help?
Thanks
Debbie

Debbie,

Everything sounds OK there. Is your new computer  a Windows XP machine with service pack 2? If so, the firewall that service pack 2 contains may be stopping your outbound connections. To correct this (I'm just guessing this may be the problem). Review this Microsoft article on confirguring the firewall    Understanding Windows Firewall in Windows XP Service Pack 2  or this one Manually Configuring Windows Firewall in Windows XP Service Pack 2 .

Good luck I hope this is all that it is.

Rick

Hi Rick
I sure appreciate all your help. Yes, I do have Window XP with all updates which include the service Pack 2, I have gone into my firewall and looked around and added FTP in there but no luck yet. I think I know my computer inside out now, but still no luck connecting to web sites. I went to the links you sent me and I don't see anything yet that will help me. I will keep trying to figure this out.
back I go to the links to explore my proplem.
Thanks
Debbie

Hi again Rick,
I had a feeling it was something to do with my Norton firewall, long story, but I finally opened up the Norton Internet Security which opened a new screen from my Norton Security screen, and clicked on Firewall, Configure, Programs, scrolled down and found a file wsftpgui.exe and click Premit. WaLa I then went and tried connecting to all 3 of my web site and got online with them!! Yahoo.
I felt noting these steps may help another person in the future
Thanks for your help
Debbie

Excellent. At least I was able to provide you with some avenue of thought on this matter.

Happy Trails

Rick
