We are currently testing the WUG MSP Technical Preview.  We deployed Level Platforms some time ago and really like the idea of moving to WUG. The big factor is getting Network Stats's for us.

Here are some of the questions/ concerns we have:

1. Not being able to see remote devices in the main central window.

2   Checking a remote site opens up a new browser window to the remote site.

3 No Support for SQL 2005 yet.

4 Not being able to apply a policy/action to a “Group”.  Currently you have to apply it at the device level.

5 Are there no “realtime” gauges of any sort?  Seems to only be last polled events.

6. Perhaps they can enable some sort of pass-through authentication when connecting to a remote site so I don’t have to re-enter my username/password?

We will continue with our tests.

We'd have to second that ourselves, especially 1, 2 and 5, which were our main concerns.

Thanks Avi,
Here are some responses:

#1: This is by design. For now it is only viewable via the web interface.

#2: This could be done with a small ASP change. Let me know if you want instructions.

#3: It will work with SQL 2005 but we haven't fully tested it with this version thus no "official" support.

#4: We have a feature request for this logged.

#5: This is on the roadmap but is not planned for this version.

#6: You shouldn't have to re-authenticate if you leave the browser window open. The authentication is cached until you close the browser window.

I hope this helps,

Jason

I am not sure if i am missing something - but i have installed and configured the Central and Remote Site but i can only do anything of any use on the Remote site machine!

If i open the Web Interface on the Central Server there seems to be no devices available, and i cannot seem to work out how to get the remotely discovered devices displayed in the central server view.

I was sort of assuming that the MSP version would allow the functionality of WUG but with the ability to put remote collection probes out on customers sites, and all of thier data was sent back to the central server.  There would then be the possibility of having customer (or probe) specific views of the data from the central server, with an all encompasing view for the MSP/Administrator.

Am i missing something obvious? I have been looking at n-able, LPI, OpManager, et al and they all seem to work in that sort of way.

Hi Chris,

It doesn't quite work that way. In order to view information for the remote locations, you must login to the web interface of the Central Site and configure Workspace Reports to show you the relevant info for each of the remote sites. You can find detailed info in the help and in the distributed deployment guide. Can you take a look and let us know if the info is not clear? Thanks,

Jason

Where on the central site are you not able to see remote sites?  Are you refering to the default workspace view "Remote Sites" located on the Central Site Web admin?  The default workspace view "Remote Sites" has a section call "Remote Site List", is this where you are not seeing your remote sites?

Just to clarify, when I use the term "Remote Site", I am refering to the computer that has "WUG Remote Site" installed on it.  This should not be confuse with devices (computers, routers, etc..) that has been discovered by "WUG Central Site" computer.  If all computers that has the "WUG Remote Site" program are configure to use a specific "WUG Central Site" computer, these computer will be listed in the default workspace view called "Remote Sites" located on the Central Site Web admin.
