| When installing WUP-2005 I follow the suggested install options (nothing special, just click next/next/accept/next...)
While installing the MS-SQL MSDE-2000 component the install fails with:
WhatsUp Professional - Install Shield Wizard ERROR: General error encountered (MSDE-2000 component). (Code: 1603) Setup was unable to configure MSDE. Release notes for this product are available... ...
And, yes I read the release notes, and This is a Windows XP Pro box with with SP2 installed. Firewalling is completely disabled. There is no virus scanner running. File-Print-Sharing is enabled. And the Security Policy for UNSIGNED-drivers is set to "silently succeed"
After verifying the settings listed above I rebooted the box and tried the install again. It still happens. |

| Try this:
Make sure that the Server and Computer Browser Service are started. If the service does not appear in the Services Manager, enable File and Print Sharing. If there is no NIC on the machine, you may have to install the loopback adapter. Then try to install MSDE 2000

| Still have the problem
Yes, both the "Server" and "Computer Browser" services are started and are set to automatic. And, as I mentioned in my original posting, the box has "File and Print sharing" enabled in the Network Properties.

| Still doesn't work...
OK, just read that installshield support document, and checked everything that applied to me as an Install-Shield-package installer (some of the hints in this document were for the packager, not the package recipient)
I checked the registry entry in item 1 (short names are allowed on my system)
Items 2 & 3 are for the installer package developer, not for the end user
For item 4, I checked that my MSI package was correct by going to the microsoft download site and trying to rerun the installer, (it told me I didn't need to install anything that my box was already up2date).
I downloaded and ran the MS-Windows_Installer_Clean_Up_Utility It said it finished correctly.
I deleted everything from my Temp and TMP directories (as shown by the dos-prompt "set" command)
No other applications are running on this machine (it is dedicated to WUG, and I shut that down when trying to install WUP-2005)
FILE_AND_PRINT_SHARING are enabled on all interfaces as is TCP/IP and in the SERVICES you can see that Computer-browser and Server are both started and set to automatic.

| After doing as mentioned in my previous post in this thrread subject...
I rebooted, and with nothing running on the box at all (just logged in) Tried re-running the WUP-2005 installer and it failed with the same message. BTW I also checked that I have 8+ GB of free space on C drive.
Then I searched the C drive for files modified in the last day (there is only one logical drive (C) on this box)
Sorted that list by Date_modified and found C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSQL$WHATSUP\Install\cnfgsvr.out
contained the following stanza many times:
###############################################################################
Starting Service ...
SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS
-m -Q -T4022 -T3659
An error occurred while attempting to start the service (1460)
SQL Server configuration failed.

A file in the same directory called "ERRORLOG" contained:

| I fixed it....
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;246694&sd=tech
You can't install MSDE (MS SQL server) via Remote-Desktop You HAVE to be on the local console.
Also, after a failed attempt via Remote-Desktop, I couldn't just go to the console. (it would fail there too)
I had to delete the Program Files/Microsoft SQL.... directory completely, then reboot, and then from the local console do the install.

| Well...sorry I couldn't help but I'm glad you were able to solve the problem. I ran into the same issue a while back. Took me forever to find out that you had to do the install from the console and not the terminal window... |
