Hi,

We are considering purchasing WUGv11 for use in our NOC and have just started trialling it. We need scalability, so have opted for Win 2003, SQL 2005 and IIS 6.0 (migrated as per the instructions in the manual).

Most aspects work well, but I am receiving the following error when attempting to change settings on the 'Configure Interface Data Collection' dialog (accessed via Device Properties > Performance Monitor > Interface Utilisation > Configure) for certain devices via the WUG v11 web interface. Even attempting to use the Cancel button once the 'Configure Interface Data Collection' dialog appears throws up the same error.

Active Server Pages error 'ASP 0115'

Unexpected error

/NmConsole/DeviceManagement/DlgDeviceProperties/DlgDevicePropertiesPerformanceMonitors/DlgConfigureInterfacePerformanceMonitor/DlgConfigureInterfacePerformanceMonitor.asp

A trappable error (E06D7363) occurred in an external object. The script cannot continue running.

Googling has suggested checking permissions - but as the manual suggests that the anonymous IIS account should be a local administrator - which I've enabled for now (surely there's a more secure way of handling authentication?) I can't see that being an issue. Certainly the security event log shows no issue.

I have updated MDAC, ensured parent paths are enabled, deleted and recreated the devices in question, tried as a different WUG user, tried from localhost and remotely.

Error E06D7363 is apparently a Microsoft C++ error. I can't find anything more precise than that. I can only assume that the issue is some conflict with WUGv11, SQL 2005 & IIS 6.0 - which I understand are unsupported.

If an IPSwitch expert wants to have a go at resolving this - great. Otherwise we might have to resign ourselves to using with MSDE and the built-in web server.

Any takers?

I have never tried that setup - I would suggest that you place the sql server on a separate box anyway, for perf and security reasons.

Also, please keep in mind that SQL 2005 is imho not supported -although many people report it works.

I hadn't yet tried that on v11 until your message.  (It is working for me  )   It appears to be doing an SNMP lookup at that point to gather active interfaces.   Not that the error should appear in the first place, but have you configured SNMP permissions for the device you're working with?

Thank you all for your responses.

I have tried rebooting to no avail. The SNMP community string is fine, as the Interfaces are successfully listed in the 'Configure Interface Data Collection' dialog box.

I wonder if it has something to do with the number of interfaces I am querying over a WAN? It's a core multilayer switch on a complex network, so the total number of interfaces is well over 100. It takes around 30 seconds to retrieve the interface list.

Every interface I expect to be listed can be seen in the data it retrieves, but I wonder if there is some hidden data (something other than Interface name, type, speed & status) that isn't being correctly retrieved due to a timeout...? A local network device with 12 interfaces does not experience the same issue.

Does IPSwitch support read this forum? I really like the product, but can't ask for official support unless we buy it. However, we are not prepared to buy it until issues like these can be resolved. Catch 22! Maybe there should be some level of support offered for triallists?

If the official line from IPSwitch support is: don't use IIS & SQL - I have to question it's scalability. Could anyone using MSDE & the built-in web server post their number of supported devices, and the level of logging being performed (in general) so I can gauge how well it can scale?

Thanks in advance.

Update:

It works fine with the built-in web server & SQL 2005. I will continue to use it in this configuration. It would have been nice to know why IIS was failing though...

Hi,

1/ Ipswitch sometimes read the forum but not always. I'm not sure, but I think that when evaluating you can call support.

2/ The official line, as far as I know, is : IIS is OK, Sql 2000 is OK, Sql 2005 is unsupported.

3/ When scalability is a concern, I would advise a three-tier setup : 1 box for IIS, 1 for Wup, 1 for Sql. I have noticed that IIS is *very* busy when serving some Wup pages (well it has to pull the reports etc !).

Another question : was IIS on the Wup box or on another one ? My understanding is that IIS itself will do snmp queries through the web interface... In that case, you must make sure that snmp is accepted from the IIS box to the managed devices...

Hy there.

I got exactly the same problem.

Is there really no other solution, that to change to the WUG Web-Server??

I really do not want to miss the IIS-Server.....

The problem only occurs with network devices with a lot of interfaces.

WhatsUp evaluators can indeed get support.  Call 781-676-5700 and ask for WhatsUp Pre-Sale Support or email evalhelp@ipswitch.com.
