| Hi all,
Currently our company is running version WhatsUp version 8. Is there a resource on how to upgrade from version 8 to version 11? Is it easy,
regards, carlo |

| WUG V11 (and WUP 2006/2006) have a 'Data Migration' tool to bring WUG V7 or V8 information into the system. Been a long while since I've used it, but it worked back then and I expect it is at least as good, today. WUP/WUGV11 can be installed on the same system as WUGV7/8 to facilitate this upgrade process and both can run at the same time (Passive Listeners can conflict!) on this machine, so you can switch between the 2 to check out the upgrade and import and when happy, just shut off WUG V7/8 (and someday uninstall it). | Hi,
Great thank you for the heads up. If I install the new WUG v11 on another machine. Would I be able to use the 'Data Migration' tool over the network? Also this tool just copies the data over from v8 to v11 right? I just want v8 to stay in working condition until we switch over to v11.

| The migration tool works on a system that has the earlier version of WU on it. My migration was done on a single machine and it went just fine. I don't think it can work on a remote machine. You would have to 'move a copy of' your earlier WU install to the new machine, then migrate. Your old WU will not be affected by the new version (I've still got V8 installed, but no longer running on my PC). As I said before you will need to be sure that only 1 is running at a time, or you will have double notifications and some other difficulties (the old SNMP and Trap listeners may still be running). If you want to move it after migration, that may be easier... Daniel Donnelly |

| | When you say to copy over the WUG v8 to another machine, is it as simple as copying and pasting the folder containing WUG v8. Earlier I spoke with a gentleman in technical support, and he said it be possible to use the "migration tool" over the network as long as the two machines have access to each other. Now I am not sure which way to go. |

| Well, it might be possible to use the tool via the network, but I don't know how that would be done (been over 2 years since I did a migration!). If you got instructions on how to do that, then I'd say 'go for it'. When I said 'copy', it was a generic term. Move accurately, I meant 'move' to the new machine. Many things to backup, need to install (to get registry setup correctly) and restore backed up materials, then use the Migrate tool. Looks like it can get data from remote system (just tried the tool), using a Windows share (or other network access) to the remote machine. Guess that is something that was added since I last looked! Neat! Guess that would be the best way to go, install WUG on the new machine, use Migrate tool to get from old WU... Be careful, you now have 2 monitoring systems running at the same time, 2X traffic and 2X Notifications! Trap senders will need adjustment to send to new machine, too. Daniel Donnelly |

| We backed up a copy of the entire WU V8 directory to a USB hard drive, moved it to another machine and then installed WU11. When you install WU11 it asks you if you want to import any data. Browse to that folder and it should import everything you had previous. The one thing that seems to be an issue when you do this, is users that are predefined. I had to recreate them. Other than that, it worked great. You just need to make sure that any changes you make to V8 after you copy the data are also reflected to V11 before you move that into production. |
