| | I also have this problem, and I notice every qy. about it in this forum has gone unanswered. Importing from prev. vers. of ws_ftp, if not other ftp clients, should be a basic function, yet I can find no info about it in the help files. It's making it difficult for me to decide to buy the product (ws_ftp Home eval.). - ed |

If you're talking about importing from an older version of WS_FTP, then here's an article on the subject. http://support.ipswitch.com/kb/WS-19991215-DM01.htm There is no way of importing/exporting sites to/from WS_FTP to/from other companies' applications. mb

The article referred to by Michael basically says to paste the old into file in the directory where the new ws_ftp is to install. Rather bizarre advice, since how is the general user 'sposed to know what that directory will be called, before installation? The article further says that once this is done, the install pgm will import the old site info. For the devil of it, I tried that, no luck; current versions of ws-ftp (Home or Pro) don't even keep an ini file in \program files\ipswitch\ws_ftp. Star Straf, I would be interested to know if you get those instructions to work! The following hacks work for me. ['m working in Win2k (NTFS) (new install) running in a dual-boot setup with Win95B (FAT) (previous install). The new install is either the latest eval. versions of Home or Pro; I'm importing from an ancient ws_ftp LE.] Pasting the old ini file over the new on in \documents and settings\<user>\application data\ipswitch\sites (this is where the ini file is in Win2k; look around for the analogous place under your OS) works pretty well - *Most* of the sites transfer properly, and work under the new installation. But some sites, although they're in the ini file, don't show up when I ran the program. I found that I could massage the site information a bit, and these sites then work too. It seems important not to lose the original entries of the ini file (that is, the ones that are there before copying over the old ini file. In my setup these original lines are: [Shared Sites] FILENAME=F:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Ipswitch\WS_FTP\Sites\ws_ftp.ini [_config_] mailaddr=wsftp90@ URLHistory=urlhistory.ini I haven't tried it (I'm tired!), but I suppose pasting in the text of the old ini file into the new one, under the original new-ini lines, rather than pasting over, might save some work. The upshot of all this technobabble (and a day's lost work) is that one can import sites, but it's a pain. We can't expect Ipswith to provide an import utility for the different ftp clients out there. But Ipswitch should work on an import utility for its own ws_ftp versions! - ed

There's no live tech support for the free eval versions of Home and Pro, but there is a 30-day money-back thing. So one thing you could do is buy it, call or email Tech Support, and if they can't easily fix it or whatever, you could just return it. mb

Ed, it worked for me. I copied my C:\Program Files\WS_FTP\WS_FTP.ini into C:\Documents and Settings\sstraf\Application Data\Ipswitch\WS_FTP Home\Sites and I now have my ftp sites complete with details and passwords working on the new version.

Thanks Star Straf. Just to complete the discussion, can you say if your files system is FAT or NTFS? I think copying the ini from FAT to FAT works OK, but things get a little messed up from FAT to NTFS. Michael - I'm evaluating the Home & Pro versions now, & expect to buy one or the other. I'll certainly then suggest that Ipswitch provide a utility and/or rewrite the article on importing. This has been an interesting & useful conversation, Thanks to you both. - ed
