When I disable the virus function, mail flows normally.  I get no indication that there are any problems and the virus definitions are up to date.

Any help would be appreciated...

Look in your Logs for AV Error Codes - then compare the error numbers with this KB Article

x:\where_ever_you_installed_IMail_Or_ICS\IMail\Spool\

the log file will have the format or SysMMDD.txt where MM is the 2 digit month and DD is the 2 digit day of the month
