| I went back in our logs to see if there was a message from the first time this happened and I found one that stands out. Notice the subject line in the header below: [snip] Received: from curso.com.br [24.86.84.213] by wmc.com (SMTPD32-8.05) id ADC1213200CE; Fri, 10 Sep 2004 15:42:09 -0700 Date: Fri, 10 Sep 2004 21:56:24 +0000 From: "Cornell Harden" <cornellharden_fy@curt.dk> Subject: =?ISO-8859-1?B?WWVzLCB5b3UgY2FuIHNsYXNoIHlvdXIgbW9udGhseSBleHBlbnNlcw==?= MIME-Version: 1.0 To: belanger@tdwilsystems.com Message-ID: <16b101c49781$1c9f0898$dc8d7dae@jibwlgb> Content-Type: text/plain Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit . . . I wonder if the odd subject line is causing it to hang. This is only a heads-up to see if anyone else sees the same thing. This is a spam message, BTW.

| I removed all of my mail messages in the spool older than 24 hours. SMTP service hasn't crashed since! |

| I did the same yesterday around 1pm and the SMTP services has yet to fail. I made a copy of the spool directory and then removed all the files prior to Sunday from the main spool directory. Seems to have worked. Man what a pain for the last week. -BS

| bad news... I ran isplcln yesterday and the SMTP service just crashed again. There were four messages processing and unfortunately, I could not copy them before the service restarted again and they were gone. I beleive they were spam messages. I'll try and stop the service manually after it crashes next time so I can get a sample of what might be causing it to hang. I have a feeling this is effecting some more than others becuase of the different spam filtering we all have going on. Those with tighter spam filters are prolly deleting the suspect message before it hangs the box. Just a guess though.

| I had the same problem. It eventually (took a couple weeks to figure out) turned out to be the HOSTS file. There needs to be SPACES separating the IP address and the host names NOT tab. Hope this helps. |
