Is the synchronization process something that can run in the background?

At first it appears that the synchronization process, after configuring, would run invisibly in the background. Well it keeps popping up as it's scheduled instead of just doing it's thing. I've got 40 plus content editors for our web site and thus need to scan for new items or updates which need to be uploaded. I've got 3 jobs it set for every 10 minutes. So the sudden displaying of the synch window is quite annoying - and it's been only 1 day so far since I installed this product.
