| QUESTION 1: Surely with this program it is possible to compare file size for changes and if there's a change it will upload over top of the same named file right? Where is the settings for this? It appears that it just compares names and for every scheduled upload it uploads the ENTIRE site again rather than just files which have been modified. QUESTION 2: Does anyone know if the schedular can run without the main application being open? ANYONE'S HELP WITH EITHER QUESTION WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!! |

| To your first question, Synch doesn't compare file sizes; it compares timestamps. Each file on your computer has a timestamp that determines when it was last editted. You can tell Synch only to overwrite older files.
To your second question, yes. The Synch utility (as well as all the other utilities are actually separate programs that do not require WS_FTP Pro to be running to use them.

| Thanks for the reply to my questions. Just followup on the timestamp discussion. Since I didn't have the feature to leave timestamp alone, all my files on the server are "newer" than the originals on my local box. ie. I have over 3000 images which aren't really going to be "modified" over time. Therefore they are always going to be uploaded every 10 minutes when the synch process launches. And since our ISP is charging for file transfer bandwidth used per month (or whatever it's called) this is going to bloat our numbers artificially. Any ideas? other than to open up every file in the 750mg website to generate new timestamps? |

| Ouch!
Well, let me ask you a question: is it necessary for you to really check to see if the files have been changed? That is to say, would it instead be sufficient just to check and make sure the files are the same on both sites only by checking the filenames? You mention that the images aren't going to be changed much, so I think this might be a better idea for you.
Keep in mind though that when you change an image in that scenario, you'll have to manually upload it to keep the remote site in sync.

| OK...here's the nitty gritty then... I've got 70 plus organizations who have the ability to add files and directories. When new stuff is added it get's synched that's great and cool. Plus another job is XML files which are named with the OrgID #. That never changes. Plus back to the Org's files and directories. Many files get updated but keep the same name. These include, council agenda for the week, Standards & specs, Newspages etc. We keep the names the same so URL's all over the web site don't break. As for the images - either they get deleted and that should be updated by the synch or new ones added - again this should be handled by the synch. So I don't understand your phrase about having to manually upload the images. Do you mean if we change the image but name it the same thing? We'd have to manually upload? This definitely is a problem if that's the case. Your FTP solution is my only hope as I've installed and tested about 14 others and none but Voyager FTP does these similar functionalities. The only probably with that app is it's completely unstable. Thanks for continuing this dialogue. |

| Ok, I thought we were only dealing with sync'ing image files that were pretty static (e.g. always the same ones). Since your remote files are obviously going to be changing on a regular basis, what you definitely need to do is get your timestamps correct on both systems.
There are tools that are available for Windows that will allow you to change the timepstamp on your local files, but it's a pain and you'll have to do it for all your files down to the second. In all, it's not very feasible.
I think your only real option is to get those files sync'd once with the timestamps preserved and keep that option enabled from now on. I know that's not a very nice option (because you pay for bandwidth), but it will work. It's a one-time hit for a longer-run payoff.
