Hello all,

I'd like to monitor my ISDN backup lines, and would like to be notified when they come up.  I have them setup right now as an "up dependency" on the WAN router connection.  It's weird because I put the IP address in for the ISDN interface and I know the isdn isn't active but it still shows it as being up, I guess its routing the ping packets thru another interface and responding.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to do this.  I don't want a red alert all the time when the isdn connection is down, because its supposed to be down.

thanks

The only reliable way I've found to monitor when an ISDN connection is made is using syslog. If you're using a Cisco router, it will log an %ISDN-6-LAYER2UP message (assuming you're logging at level 6 or above) when it makes an ISDN connection. If you're forwarding your syslog messages to WhatsUp, you could set it up to watch for this message (and possibly the corresponding %ISDN-6-LAYER2DOWN message) to determine if the ISDN is connected or not. The drawback to this is that it's a passive monitor and not something that's actively being checked.

Jim,

We had the same issue for our Dial Backup (Modem Connected to Aux Port).  We worked around it by using the Interface SNMP Monitor.  When DBU is not up, a Dormant condition exists (5 - Dormant), however, as you mentioned, we have "False" indications if it dials in and then changes to a 1 (1 - Active).

Bummer...

Hi guys,

That's a very interesting topic.

I am a pretty new user of WhatsUp Pro and I did not add these ISDN backup links in my database but I reckon it would be a really interesting and nice feature to add.

Rather than using syslog events (passive monitors) like Jim (I don't mean that it's not a good idea though , but it seems more complicated and not checked as often as a SNMP monitor would be), I would be more interested in using a SNMP supervision like RTroyKlein.

But what do you mean by "we have "False" indications if it dials in and then changes to a 1 (1 - Active)."

Don't you want to be alerted if the link is being used (switching from a down state to an up state?)

If anyone has advice or hints to give us about configuring the ISDN backup links in WUP, you are more than welcome

We've done it on ours as a dependancy to check ip 10.10.1.2 (ISDN) only if 10.10.1.1 (ATM) is in a DOWN state.
