Any way to use WS-FTP Pro to download YouTube .flv files ?

Using multiple tools for file transfers is a little sucky. I bought the Pro version cuz its a nice tool and I like supporting companies that do good work. Getting a simple answer from decumentation gets bogged down with the techie details... not that I'd understand it.

And no, I haven't tried to do it. And yes, Windows is kinda anti-robust for maintaining connections to sites. Getting the 17-meg Colbert-at-Correspondents-Dinner .flv fails over and over for me wth Windows.

Moving files to different folders

I'm trying to reorganize files into sub folders on my ftp site. I'm using home, and when I select the files and drag them to the new folder it says it is starting the transfer. Each time it has disconnected and said it couldn't open the file. I tried moving only one file at a time with same results. I do have the "allow files to be moved" thing checked in the general options tab.

I downloaded the trial copy of professional and tried using that, same results.

aaargh! anyone with ideas out there? thanks, Patty

WS FTP Home now opens and hangs with no left/right panels

I've been using this product successfully since December. Last week suddenly it has refused to work. The program loads but then hangs. If I click on anything I get the NOT RESPONDING notation and the eternal hour glass. I've running Vista by the way. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing the product but that didn't work. Can anyone help?

When I attempt to connect to the server - the dialog states that it's "connecting to IP," then after a few seconds states "connection failed 'myhostname.com' - connection timed out."

I'm relatively inexperienced with ftp - I've spent a lot of time with a live support center where my information is hosted, and they can access my information, but I have yet to get in.

Restrict Local Computer

Difference between WS FTP and IE

Hi,

I'm sure this is a totally newbie question.

If I setup a connection to a given FTP with WS FTP or go to the same FTP site from IE, why do I see differences in avaliable content? The content seems to be totally different. What I see and get to use in IE for example doesn't even show up in WS FTP, this also applies the other way around. the only differece being is that I need to input a user name and password in WS FTP. What am I doing wrong?

Can't upload anything site worthy

Alrighty here my problem and I apologize if this isn't the right place for it but I searched around and this seemed like the only spot so here I go... I am the admin/owner of several sites and I use Ipswitch to work on them all. But one of my main sites won't let me upload anything exact pictures. At first I thought it was size related but a normal picture (which I can upload and see) is even at it's smallest 2 KB but when I go into a skin to change something about it like the color of the background it won't let me. So then I pulled it off the box to my desktop to change it and then uploaded it again and it still won't hold the changes even when it asks me to overwrite. It's a small 1 KB file and yet it says it's uploaded it successfully and overwrote the old one yet when I go to the site the changes are not made and when I open it the codes have gone back to the old ones... it's like it caches it somewhere and yea I'm pressing overwrite not cancel.

I log in fine hense the reason I can upload pictures and stuff and I am the TOP admin running things and have never had this problem before until I switched my stuff over to this new box so I'm hoping it's something as small but can anyone help me?

Does anyone know how to change the permissions of a file? On my old box it was just listed in the options when you right click but when I right click in this box and go to view > details nothing happens.

Been using the Home product fine for a few months. Tonight when I log on, I can't get anything to appear on the left-hand pane. It simply says "blank connection pane" where it once automatically displayed my documents folder. I haven't changed anything. What happened? How do I get my local directory to appear again? Can't find any useful buttons or drop-down options on the product itself..

WS FTP Keeps Quitting Automatically

I am using the Vista version. My firewall is Zone Alarm Free and my virus checker is Bit Defender. I can access my site OK but the Quit command is automatically made so I cannot stay connected to my site - to do any uploads etc.

I have no idea why the QUIT command is automatically made. I cannot see anything wrong in the settings. It suddenly just happened. I have unloaded Zone Alarm and the problem still occurs. I am using Passive Mode which is the default setting and worked fine before.

I would be grateful if any one could advise me as to what might be wrong.

Can't connect to my web server

I can't comnnect to my web server, I get the message "Inalid server address"

I type in ftp.mydomain.dk and the user name and the password but for some reason
there is something wrong.
It works fine in other FTP clients so I can't see why it is a problem here.

I have tried to change the FTP mode but the problem is the same.

Can some one help me?

I already posted in the Vista section a while ago, but no one has replied.

Ok, so I had WS FTP Home working fine with vista, no probs. Now though, when I open it and sign on to the server, it does sign on, but I can't se any of my files on the right pane where they should be.

Does anyone know why this is??

Where is 'Save Current Folders as Connection Folders'?

I had an old old free version of WS_FTP and just bought the home version of WS_FTP. However, WSFTP Home doesn't seem to have a feature that I specifically bought it for: The button that saves the current folders as the startup directories.

I manage about 50 websites and that was a useful feature, especially for sites that have a lot of information in subdirectories. I don't want to be constantly typing in the paths to startup directories.

Also, for some reason the button "Change Directory - Enter or browse for the folder name you would like to change to" does not let me use the browse option: "Failed to open specified root directory." What's up with that?

Extracing Password

Well, some of you may say that I'm trying to steal, hack, whatever. I don't care, that's not the case.

One of the organizations I belong to has a website. The problem is, however, that this website hasn't been updated in two years.

So, in trying to get it back up, they want me to try to update everything. This naturally would be fine, if only I had the password to access the server.

The last webmaster (of 2 years past) had the password saved in WS_FTP. However, this is also the password to access the server management at the hosting website.

I've asked around, and literally no one knows what the password is. And the financial records as to what the account number was (to recover the password) have disappeared.

So, here's the question.

Is there any way to extract the password from the program?

Yes dead in the water - but why & how to fix or work around - is it because Im using MS Word 2007 ? Years ago I imported a .rtx file from MS Word 2000 into WS FTP and presto it was on the web & still is. Looked in this forum for answers to a index htm (big help to be told the index file is a simple file) problem - :w00t: but say nearly 500 views & no replies!!

Cannot access WS-FTP Home

After I reinstalled the Evaluation copy, I let it slip past the 30 days before I tried to do my activation. I can't get to the "Activate Now" step. I have my License Key and Serial Number.

Resumed uploads always overwrite?

No one else seems to be having this problem so here goes.

I am using Home 2007 on a wireless/microwave hybrid connection that drops every half an hour (there is nothing that can be done about this).

I have "Automatically resume transfers when application starts" selected and retries maxed out. That's the closest thing I can find to an automatic resume option. But when I do this, it starts overwriting the file it already started uploading.

So if I set it and go to bed, it writes the same bits of information over and over for the next 6 hours and never finishes the file. I have tried at three sites (lulu.com, archive.org and my own site) with the same result.

UNLESS I choose to prompt before overwriting, in which case I have to come back to the computer and press "resume" every half hour. The files are complete when I'm done, but it shouldn't take me 9 days to upload a file that's supposed to take 18 hours.

Since no one else seems to have this trouble I suspect I'm missing something obvious, but I've looked at every inch of the program and help files and I don't see anything that tells me what I'm doing wrong.

Will not list root directory

My WS-FTP has been working just fine. Still does when I go to search other servers. But on the server where most of my work is, I have lost the ability to list the folders in my web root directory. I can get to subdirectories by typing in the path, can transfer file and all the rest. But it will no longer display all the folders in the root. It worked fine last week.

I presume this is a problem on my server. I have admin access to it, and have looked at the properties and permissions of the root folder. I can see nothing there that is different from the the sub directories, which I can see and drill down from.

Are there other server side settings I should be looking at? Are there settings specific to FTP?

WSFTP Home slow to connect, and keep-alive

Hi.. I'm a long-time user of WS_FTP_LE and recently decided to evaluate Home version. Frankly I'm not a `home´ type of user, and instead, run Win Pro OS in the home office. So, I have a bit of a rub with the product name [Home], but don't need all of the FTP Pro features, necessarily. (read: Google search)

Question1: connecting to webspace on my ISP is ~4x slower with Home than with WS_FTP_LE version. Why so slow? and what can be done to speed up the connect?

Question2: is there a `keep connection alive´ running by default? and if so, how long is the default period?

WS_FTP Home for Vista 2007 'hangs' on launch

WS_FTP Home 2007 for Vista seems to install ok on my laptop but on launching the program it stops responding and 'hangs' and I have to close the program. I've uninstalled and reinstalled it a couple of times to no effect. The laptop is a Compaq Pesario C502TU and the antivirus is AVG. It doesn't show any conflicts, just hangs.
The WS_FTP Home version is 2007-0-02 - 2007-05-29 which I think is the latest one?

Hope you can help with this one.

Any way to prevent losing a file transfer?

On my website, if I click on some folders they sit for about 30 seconds each time with the process bar going up and down and I can't click on any other sub folder with out getting an error message. And the folder isn't one that has a lot of large images.. about 40 100k images with several sub folders. Also, when I move or copy a picture to that folder from another onsite folder it seems to take a very long time, about 30 seconds for a 100k jpg.

I was going to buy the new version, but now that I'm having this problem, I'm wondering if I should.

Cannot get left hand window to show folder on my home computer

I have been using WS_FTP Home for a few months now and had it set so that it connects automatically when I open the program. But suddenly it wouldn't open so I clicked the message which invited me to click to connect.

It DID connect but instead of the left hand window showing folders on my home computer and the right hand window showing my web site I have the heading "Your genealogy site" on both sides.

What on earth can I do to put things right?

Information window won't lock back into position

Hello everyone,

I just downloaded WS_FTP Home a couple of days ago, and I really like it a lot. However, today as I'm using it, the Information Window "unlocked" from its position at the bottom of the window. And now I can't "lock" it back into position. I can have it "floating" above the main window, or make the Information window full-screen, but I can't lock it down at the bottom of the screen.

Any ideas?

I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling but it didn't help.

I'm running WindowsXP Pro.

FTP Error not stopping BAT

Problem i have a command line ftp running through a BAT file in windows
and the FTP is getting an error 1/2 way through writing the file however the remainder of the BAT process continues.

Can I validate taht the transfer tranferred everything?
Can I trap the error and send it back to the bat file?

The problem is that ater the incomplete transfer the file is processed as a whole file or a whole set of files.

However this is the first step in a process flow AND RECIEVES AN ERROR CODE OF 0. The file exists because the process wrote out some of the file out. Then an unzip fires next this is BAD.

I want the process to fail. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to install the shareware version of WSFTP home.
I had the same message or nearly so, when trying to install WSFTP pro.
When that didn't work, I downloaded the Home version.
I can't get past the installshield with either version.

Windows XP Home
Core 2 Duo chip
2 gigs of ram
500 gig Seagate sata drive

Thumbnails don't regenerate

I uploaded some jpgs and then later changed the names of some of these same image files locally. I deleted the files on the sever and uploaded the new files that had the same name as the old ones. WS generated the old thumb nails associated with the original file names instead of making new ones.

Also, If I up load an image it makes the thumnail and all is fine. If I then change the same named jpg locally, or if I rename a different image to that original name, and then upload it and over write the original one on line, it replaces that image, but the thumbnail in WSFTP is not updated, even if I hit the refresh button in WS or F5. The only way I can get WS to update the thumb on line is to rename it, and then I have to rename it back to the original name on line so that it will work with the HTML it is set up for.

Please help, as I am updating a lot of pix and have hidden pictures on line now... I can't tell what I actually have with out opening each one as the thumbs are not reliable... not much of a FTP program in this state.

PS: If this is a software bug it, and/or it's work around, should be in the FAQ section until it is fixed with a free patch? Asking a customer to shell out $30 for support seems unfair IMHO. I bought the program just over a year ago. If this isn't a WTS software problem, my apologies to WTS, but I still think it should be in thier FAQ section as it apparently isn't just me having the problem.

Paul Beugeling had this work around, not very convenient for an payware FTP program that is supposed to work, but at least it is a temp solution till it gets fixed or the problem is divulged by a WTS Tech here... [b]WTS? [/b]

I've just downloaded the Home version.

Tried to tidy up my web site, and I get the following error message

CWD /htdocs5
50 OK. Current directory is /htdocs
RMD cornwall
550 Can't remove directory: Directory not empty

I have already set options to "Allow non-empty folders to be deleted", but it still won't let me.

Any ideas what I may be doing wrong.

Double Encrypting

I have been sending files with WS_FTP Home and had no problems until yesterday. The recipient said the file was double encrypted and unusable. I have looked through the software to see if there is a setting that would encrypt the file as it sends it to the FTP site. If it were already encrypted, then it would possibly be encrypted twice. If that is the case, since I can't find where the setting is, I can't find where to change it back. Can anyone help with this problem? Or do you have any ideas how I could be double encrypting?
