First impressions

Fired up V12 on a test box this morning... Here are my first impressions.

PLUS SIDE :

> Everything seems WAY faster. My test box is roughly 3 times less powerful than my prod box, but launching the main console is very fast, and the web console also looks far more responsive than in v11.

> VERY NICE TO HAVE : At least decent snmp tools, with the snmp walker & explorer ! I especially love the feedback about the compilation status of a mib.

> SSG graphs seem to be cool, but it should be possible to turn them on only when wanted. The way I see it, they probably query frequently the device (like, every 5 seconds) while they are displayed, which can be unwanted while you're just looking at the main graph.

> SMS Direct notifications are cool (thanks Steve) and they even work with my siemens mc-35 box. No more playing with scripts !!

DOWN SIDE :

> Very basic and long-awaited functionality still left behind : intra-device dependencies (now, I won't explain again :) ).

> Web alarms still not reverted to the 2006 approach -or at least, because I think that some people preferred the 2006 way and others prefer the wug v11 way, it would be nice to have the choice between both.

??? UNKNOWN :

> Web alarms don't play sound on my browser...

> Text-to-speech work when testing interactively, but not real alarms.

These two things may be because of my test platform, although sounds & tts work with other apps.

Slow response in WhatsUp Gold Premium v12 Console

Before I upgraded today, I was operating under WhatsUp v11. I performed an inplace upgrade on the same system and since then, it takes awhile to load up any screen so I can make changes in the device properties. I am examining the task manager and notice that WhatsUp is "Not Responding".

However, if I wait it will continue to operate as normal. I can manage to work with it, but i can get annoying if you have over 100 devices to monitor. WhatsUp v11 was working fine (speed wise) prior to this upgrade. Any help would be appreciated.

Unknown Processor Type for Xeon 5160 / X5355

I have quite a few Dell 2950s (dual and quad core Xeon). Windows report these as 5160 and X5355, but in WhatsUp they are "Unknown Processor Type".

We would like users to try this new action type with any GSM modem.

•Please setup the following scenario using the SMS Direct action:

You need to alert 4 people via the SMS Direct action whenever one of 5 critical devices goes down. Once you have things setup, please test your settings by initiating a false down on the 5 devices, all at the same time (as though you've had some kind of major outage).
These directions are intentionally vague. Please let us know how you set up your test and what the results were.

a.How did you find the setup process?

b.Were the SMS messages received by the intended recipients?

c.Do you have any suggestions?

Wow! Displaying comments on the Web UI is stupid

I leaped from Whatsup 2006 to WUP12 and I gotta say its nice but there is one "feature" that needs to be fixed. And fixed now. Its the fact that the webpage now displays the Active montior comments. This needs to be able to be turned off. We have 6513's with over 400 interfaces that we monitor and there is just a big pile of text poo that displayed. This renders the map unreadable.

I called tech support an they told me there is a bug already opened for this. Escalate it and get it fixed.

Whats up dosn't show device up after down on some items

I have seen that when a device goes down, I will get the alert then work on it and bring the device back up again. However, WhatsUp will not poll the device anymore and display it up again. I have confirmed that the device is up from the station that WhatsUp is loaded on, and tested all the active montiors that are being monitored. i am monitoring Ping and HTTP, and i can get both from the machine however WhatsUp still shows down. typically i reboot and this will resolve it. All other devices are polling/monitoring/alerting just fine. this happens with several different devices so it's not limited to a particular Server/Switch/Router/OS/location.
i am not going to reboot yet incase someone wants me to / suggests some alternate to try or troubleshoot.

Jscript performance monitor worked in Wug11, not working in 12...

I have this javascript I use to calculate Cisco Memory Usage. It worked fine in Wug 11. Once I migrated to Wug 12, it no longer works. There are no errors in the performance monitor error log. Any ideas??

When I run it under the active script test, I get the following-----

Wug 11 / SQL 2000 Upgrade Question

I looked through the posts, but didn't see an answer -- sorry if i missed it.

We have a server running Wug11 with a local SQL2000 instance on it.

We've setup a new server for Wug12, and want to move our database over and do some testing (have both servers run in parallel for a bit) before we shut down and de-commission the Wug11 server.

What is the best way to do that?

Is the Wug12 install "smart" enough to figure out I'm running SQL2000 and make me upgrade it during the install?

Should I install Wug11 and SQL2000 on the new server, import the database, and the upgrade SQL manually and then upgrade Wug?

My serial number for the V12 final build won't work

Installed the latest V12 final build following e-mail from JB Mon 28th Apr and all goes well apart from the serial number given in e-mail for V12 preview won't work now. (worked with tech preview OK) Info relating to the latest final build says that the original mail ser. no should work.

Please advise. (still had two days left for the preview ver.)

I have WU Pro 2006 working OK for a couple of years and installing this on test XP box to check it out.

Bulk Insert at the DB Level

I currently populate my WUG installs with DB calls and sql. This process though somewhat effective does not meet my needs of completely having a hands free installation. Are there plans to provide some other stored procedures to bulk insert into the DB to be able to make settings like SNMP information, disk utilization etc. without added development?

Does this mean the minimum 'recommended' RAM requirements should be 3GB total? Currently, we're consistently utilizing 90%+ of the 2GB of memory allocated (and 75%+ of the 2GB MSDE2K dB) on the VM server WUGv11 is installed on, and I have requested an increase to 4GB of RAM, but given the history of our WUG server, I'm thinking maybe I should increase it even more for the anticipated move to WUGv12.

Anyone,

Any clues for those experienced enough with RAM requirements for SQL Server (and Express), how much RAM a fully-loaded 4GB MSQL2k5Express dB would use? I'm working in a VM environment and doing so successfully for the most part, but I don't want to have to keep increasing the RAM requirements thru the VM interface... Being as I'm already looking at doubling that to 4GB of RAM, and looking at requirements for WUGv12 looking very similar to that of WUGv11, would 4GB or RAM be more in line with anticipated RAM usage, or should I consider more memory for performance, etc, like maybe 5-6GB?

Diagnostic Report Question which does not appear to have been fixed

Per your request, the issue I mentioned in E-Mail which does not appear to have changed from WUGv11 that Tech Support with the Diagnostic Report giving an SQL Server Option for I believe it was the "SQL Server Option: Max Server Memory (MB) Issue The database configuration value (-1) is less than the desired minimum (512)." or the "SQL Server Option: Set Working Set Size Issue The database configuration value (-1) is not equal to the desired value (0)." error which supposedly really wasn't an error. Was Tech Support incorrect in telling me not to worry about it, or is it really a false report issue that needs to be corrected in a later SP or the next release of the WUG product?

Try not to waste too much time understanding why we have as many monitors in the dB as we have, and yes, it's working quite nicely for the most part, without too many false reports. If anything, I would suspect isues with the number of networks we're watching, and I'm running active discovery on, but we manage that with 6-hour cycles or 12 hour cycles, or 24 hour cycles depending on which networks the server teams have VM access to with the VMOTION NIC's. Anyway, Here's the report I ran on our WUG dB after I had imported it into WUGv12:

IE7 issue with Workspace View dropdown and Help button

In IE7, on the Device Status page, the Workspace View dropdown and the Help button are not visible. In Firefox, both are displayed as normal. (see attachments). This is occurring on random devices, not all.

(Using an XP workstation with RC1 installed)

MS SQL Error when adding new devices

I've been rolling out version 12. With the exception of a few teething problems (thanks to Sergio for helping out with these), all has been going great.

However, as of today I've started to experience problems with adding new devices.

When adding a new device, I get the following error:

Description=[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]The UPDATE statement conflicted with the FOREIGN KEY constraint "FK_Device_nActionPolicyID". The conflict occurred in database "WhatsUp", table "dbo.ActionPolicy", column 'nActionPolicyID'.

Following this the dialogue "Failed to add device" appears.

Despite the message, if I refresh the screen, the device is visible and has been added (although in an unknown state - shows as grey). The device is also visible through the web console.

Device Properties all looks normal with the exception that the SNMP credentials are blank (through my defaults in the Advanced options of Add New Device these usually get identified correctly).

After correctly completing the SNMP details, I can then monitor the device as normal, and have full access to graphing etc. However, unless I restart WUG, the device is always shown to be in an unknown state (grey icon).

I've carried out 'Validate and compact database' from the WUG console - this completed with no errors.

I have 35 devices defined, and a large number of active monitors and performance monitors specific to individual devices.

My workaround at the moment is to add the desired devices and then restart WUG.

I admit to being completely clueless regarding MS-SQL, and am at a loss to work out the problem. I'm also quite worried that there is an issue here which needs to be resolved.

WUG Server O/S: Windows Server 2003 R2
DB Version : MS SQL Server 2005 MSDE (bundled with WUG)

I'd appreciate any help or advice on this.

WUGv12 Feature Request and Suggestions

I know this is coming late to the table with these suggestions and feature requests, but hopefully they are fairly simple to implement (I know, nothing is ever simple, but seriously consider them):

First, the Feature Requests:

1. You have SSG's for all of the other performance counters, but none for the "Interface". As a Network Engineer, this would be one feature I really need, more so than the CPU, Memory, or Disk SSG's... Don't know how hard it would be to implement this, but I was really looking forward to hopefully being able to have this one feature in RC1, and then found it still missing. (Ok, let me clarify since I just realized something- I was looking at the "Add Content" options in the Device View, that's where it's missing)

2. The ability to set up multiple "Action Policies". I have a large number of routers and switches I ahve to maintain, and some of the field techs want to be included on alerts only for the sites they are responsible for. This creates a custom alerting nightmare, in that I can not use groups within groups for the action policy the way I used to use them in WUGv8, and instead have to maintain alerting on way too many devices with custom "Individual Actions"...not very efficient, but it works, and is a pain to maintain. This is one change I really would like to see happen

Suggestions:

1. When looking at the menu for the "Device Properties" of any device, since you have to set up credentials before you can set up the Performance Monitors. Because of this, I'd like to suggest moving "Credentials" selection up between the "General" and "Performance Monitors" labels (or at least above it). This would make for a logical progression of things to do, when setting up a device in the WUGv12 system for the first time.

2. It would be very helpful to be able to display more than 14 items in the Device Status view. If I try to keep everything I'm interested in, I exceed the current limit of 14, and have to sacrifice a view or two.

3. It would be helpful to be able to set up a custom default view that include the Device Views. Currently, I can set up a custom view, and copy it to any profile I want, but the Device view customizations do not get copied with it, necessitating I set up the new account, copy the default view I want into it, and then log in to it, select a device to view, and then manually customize that view on each account I have to create. In a onesy-twosy type of mode, it's not bad, but try creating 10-15 accounts at one and have to go thru that, and it's a pain. How about copying the entire "workspace" view to include the Device Status View and any other custom views?

4. I believe I had addressed this in the forums once before, but I'll add it here again to be sure it gets requested- I'd like to have a bigger field to see the entire name of a "Select Active Monitor:" field in the Active Monitor Availability screen. The reason for this is that Nortel switches sometimes burry the interface name behind all of the standardized 'switch model name' and "interface" naming, and then dispaly what the actual reference we as engineers use to identify a given port. To customize this on my WUGv11 installation, I had to modify a couple of the .ASP files in the HTML subdirectories

I can attach my customized files and any images of pre-post views if you like, as they were a pain to find the entries I needed to modify, but I wrote them down so I could find them any time I had to install a new update or new version of the software.

5. It would be nice if I could get the true LDAP authentication working. In our environment, we use eDir from Novell for LDAP, and it requires a secure connection and it's own authentication to access LDAP. The authentication piece is missing in WUGv11 and WUGv12, so I've had to configure it to look to a specific AD server, which gets it's authentication handed to it by the eDIR LDAP directory. Any suggestions here?

Do you have the original email with the serial number? If so, proceed with the instructions below. If not, skip to "Instructions for upgrading from TPP Build 1 without SN".

When I add a new device to WUG and get partway through adding Active Monitors to the device, I get the error message:

A trappable error (E06D7363) occurred in an external object. The script cannot continue running.

This is occurring while using IIS 6 as the Web server. It does not seem to happen while using the built-in Web server. Any thoughts on why this might be happening?

Future feature request

I know this is coming very late with these suggestions and Feature requests. Hopefully they will be considered for future releases. It was suggested that I try V12 after the polling engine became bogged down to the point nothing was polling. This was due to the number of performance counters I have.

Currently I have 300 devices with

513 active monitors

2 passive monitors

1716 performance monitors (mostly Citrix monitoring)

Last week I had to place a group of servers (35) into maintenance and when they were pulled out the polling engine stopped. This was said to be due to a limitation with V11 having issues with over 1500 monitors. I have only had V12 installed for a week and ran into the same issues but as soon as the services were restarted, and the server rebooted, I have not had the problem again. V12 seems to resolve this issue, at least at this point.

I would like to suggest a few Feature Requests.

1) The ability to enter a max value for a custom performance monitor and the ability to graph the output similar to the Disk utilization on a top 10 dashboard.

2) Last Polled Value (Specific Monitor) for Custom performance monitors. Need an option to reverse the Green/Yellow/Red on the graph. In short allow the small number to be red while the upper number is green. This would be helpful to track the number of free Citrix licenses. The graph should also display the Actual number and the last poll time

3) Default performance monitoring for Active Directory services (Connected Users, LDAP sessions, bind time, replication ) example of this is at http://www.quest.com/spotlight-on-active-directory

4) Default monitoring for Citrix (Active/Disconnected sessions per server, Number of licensed used/free Logins enabled/Disabled)

5) Default monitoring of Registry size. Due to the number of users logging into our Citrix servers we have to keep a constant watch on the Registry size or it will not create the profile for users to login.

6) Different Level of Alerts, Normal/Warning/Critical/Down. Possibly a warning level for selected items and the option for only to be seen by certain users (admins instead of operators)

7) Alerts for performance monitors. Ability to set a default alert value and individually per device

8) Ability to set our own default attributes

9) Option to continue polling if a device is in maintenance. Many times we still need to know if a device is down or has rebooted even if it is in maintenance mode

10) Maintenance period: option for Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Quarterly or Yearly maintenance periods. It would also be nice to have an option to set a onetime scheduled maintenance period.

11) Ability to acknowledge down devices from the dashboards instead of having to go into device view.

12) Alert if Device has not polled any of the monitors (performance) within a certain period of time (2 polling periods)

What's Up Gold 12 feature request

I am a supporter of What's Up Gold, recently I find a test report compare between What's Up Gold 11 and ipMonitor. It said that What's Up Gold 11 did not support or limited support of the following feature:

1. All product functionality is provided from a web-based interface

2. Monitoring policies are automatically configured for specific application- or ervertypes, such as MS Exchange or web servers

3. End-to-end synthetic transaction testing, trending and reporting for applications including Exchange, SQL Server and others

4. Dynamic mapping of monitors, devices, and groups of devices, including full web-based map editing and configuration changes

5. Built-in NOC views for instant visual updates of up/down status, response time, and
critical system details

6. Groups may be defined for any combination of monitors regardless of physical device

Windows Server 2008

I am a customer with a licensed version of WhatsUp 11, with an active maintenance contract. I upgraded my WhatsUp server to Windows 2008 and it would no longer function. Tech Support suggested that I try the v12 RC. That worked perfectly, even kept all of my devices and maps. The only problem that I am having is that this version times out in 16 days. How can I keep it running until I can get the official version?

Also I have one minor issue to report. Is there a way to turn off the link labels? It would be nice if that was an option from the right click menu like the dependency arrows.

Small issues with RC1 installation

Nothing terrible, but :

1/ Although my test box uses a default install (with the Sql express on the same box and so on), the db upgrade scripts did not run by themselves. I had to run them manually.

2/ I had a few custom icons & bitmaps, and they were deleted. I don't think this was the case in previous release; stuff like that used to be kept.

Needed Feature

Were a large company with many engineers. Sometimes and always nobody communicates what there doing. Our previous monitoring system you could attach notes next to the down server saying something like "im on it -bg" or "switch problem -bg" on the web interface, Then the other engineers or boss can see the quick note and not dispatch. Is it possible you could have a custom web app view that would display the note next to the down active monitor. It doesn't seem very hard to make but i could really really use this feature.

Device Import From Prior Version

RC1 - no graphs after updating

64 Bit Platform

We need users to test the different portions of the web interface that make use of SSG.

Specifically:

•[b][u]The Web Performance Monitor[/u][/b] - (GO > Tools >Web Performance Monitor).
We would like users to point this tool to any non-Windows devices they might have (linux, unix, cisco routers, temperature probes etc.) and use SNMP to graph any values you might find interesting. We would also like users to point the tool to devices running different versions of Windows and use both WMI and SNMP to graph values. While doing this play with the graph settings and respond with a general impression of the tool.

•[b][u]The Web Task Manager[/u][/b] – (GO > Tools >Web Task Manager).
We would like users to test this tool in a similar fashion. Point it to a few varied devices on the network and attempt to monitor using both WMI and SNMP depending on the device. We are especially interested in any results from using SNMP v3 for any of this. When connecting to a non-windows device the “performance” tab will not work but the other two will.

•[b][u]The new SSG Workspaces[/u][/b]
We would like users to create a new workspace view and place any and all of the new SSG workspace reports inside it. Then like the above SSG tests, point them to varied Windows OSes and non-windows devices.

•[b][u]Full reports with SSG graphs at the bottom[/u][/b]
We would like users to try each of the reports against varied Windows OSes and non-Windows devices (using proper credentials).

1) Was the machine you were activating from behind a firewall, proxy server, content filter, or similar device?
If so, what type?

2) Were you able to successfully complete activation?
If not, what problem(s) did you have? Can you provide info on your environment and configuration?
