Then Click New - Contact. Enter in the UserID@Host.com and a display name for that user - there real name.

Now when all users login they will see that user regardless of what IMail Host they login to and what DB type you are using.
Now all you have to do is add the users you want everyone to see.

Now for speed - Persistent connections are a little faster for the most part - So if you set Force Clients to use Persistent Connections on the Default user Options page click apply and logout and back in that may help a little with the speed (Users will automaticly use the persistnet network connection next time they login again)

Also the bandwidth usage on the client is related to the number of contacts on the public contact list - the more contacts the more data has to be thrown arround for those contacts statuses. the more contacts the more data and on a slow connection that will cause some lag.

RE: IM and IMail issues...pulling out my hair!

I will actually have to add them as users at that point, correct? When i use the Imail db authentication, no users show up in the servers pub contacts list or the domains.. even if i click the display external contacts checkbox. Also, i figured out that i could add one of the other domain's users to my personal contacts on the client side, but Im not sure if it was working correctly. Another issue is that the server is located at a high speed host in USA, but when connection from around the world, everything is dog-slow... any thoughts? Thanks for your on going support and help! (If you ever need any ASP/SQL favors, let me know!)

JP

RE: IM and IMail issues...pulling out my hair!

....There is one way - but it is not automatic.

You can go in the Public Contact list in the server manager and add all the users from your domains in there and then they will be shown to all your users.

It's a pain but possible.

RE: IM and IMail issues...pulling out my hair!

Currently no, I think your the first person who wanted to do that.

I would suggest you send an email to support@ipswitch.com and in that email ask them to enter a Feature Request - be sure to give a use case (how you want it to work and what you are trying to achieve) that way when it is considered for implementation they will know what needs to be done.

Anything else?

RE: IM and IMail issues...pulling out my hair!

Mike

Thanks for your help. With the proper procedure, i can now login using imail authentication...

Next issue:

We have several domains hosting mail through our IMail Server for our various international partners. When I login to one domain, I only see users for that domain. Is there a way that all users can see everyone on all supported IMail domains? This is very important.

Thanks again! We are really enjoying the software and also the IMail server.

JP

RE: IM and IMail issues...pulling out my hair!

After changing the Authentication Database you need to Click Apply as you did, then you need to restart the service (On the Status Page)

Other settings that require a service restart are the Log Type and Log Directory and the Thread Options, everything else takes effect as soon as you click Apply

And you do not have to use the IMail Database, you can use any of the database types listed and they will all work.

FYI - If you are using any DB except the Ipswitch IM Server you may want to enable "Show External Authentication Database users in the Public Contacts" located on the Public Contact List Page

RE: IM and IMail issues...pulling out my hair!

sorry for the double post... was not intentional.

IM and IMail issues...pulling out my hair!

We have been trying out the Ipswitch IM evaluation locally and want to see how it works with our dedicated IMail server at Maximum ASP. Our mail server is using standard IMail database and has several hosts that accept mail. The version of IMail is 8.10. I have installed the evaluation version of IM on the same box. It is necessary to use the IMail database for IM as well. After I installed the IM software, I choose "IMail Server" as the authentication database and click 'apply' and 'ok'. I have also tried to click configure and choose one of the hosts, although nothing really happens, so i assume all IMail hosts are included. I have even changed the aliases to mail.domain.com instead of just domain.com. Problem is when i try to login to the server from my local box with the IM client (i have a separate IMail user account under each domain for testing purposes) i use the username@domain.com or username@mail.domain.com and enter the password for the test user (I am sure I am using the correct password, have changed it many times!), i get a 'Invalid account name or password' error. If i tinker with the alias's it will just keep attempting to login forever.

I know this issue has something to do with the integration between the two apps b/c if i just setup a new user under the standard IM database, i can login fine everytime.

Any ideas? I really need this to work!

TIA

JP
