There seems to be an issue when it attempts to retrieve a list of contacts for a user. That plus the fact that you are having timeout issues and are seeing slow performance from the lite template leads me to believe everything is not configured correctly on your system. You may want to give tech support a call. They should be able to resolve those issues and most likely you'll see faster performance from the lite template after they have made their changes. I would also recommend checking the items that John T mentioned. He is a great resource for getting Imail set up the best way possible.
As for the other items you mentioned related to the low bandwidth template:

1. Customizable Layout: The new "lite" template is 100% stylesheet driven. This includes colors, fonts and just about all of the screen layout. If you are familar with CSS, you can go in an alter the css/WebClientLite.css file and make the low bandwidth template look however you please. I agree that this isn't quite as easy as the old method if you don't know CSS but that option does exist. Please keep in mind that this is the first release of the lite template. If there is a big customer demand for a way to easily customize the layout then we will add that to our feature request list and start work on it. In the end our goal is to always make the customer happy and give them what they want.

2. Folder list with sizes/message count: This already exists if you click on "View Mail Folders". If there some additional information you would like to see or something about the layout you don't like, let me know and I can make some adjustments or at the very least get the request added to our feature requests list.

3. Spell Check: This already exists when you compose a new message unless you are composing a plain text message which is the same functionality that exists in the full client.

4. Search and Personal Filters: I will make a note about these and add them to our feature request list. By personal filters, I am assuming you are meaning Rules. We purposely left this out of the "lite" template in our first release. The thinking behind this was that users would be using the "lite" and "full" templates together. For example, someone would use the "full" while at work and on a high speed connection and the "lite" from home using dial up. Under this scenario, they can set up their rules while using the "full" version and thereby really don't need it available under the "lite" template. While building the "lite" template, the overall goal was to create something that was as fast loading as possible. The rules interface needs a lot of javascript and had interface screens that really couldn't be sped up without losing something in usability, so we elected to leave them out of the first release of the "lite" template. The contact groups screen was left out for this same release.
I am very interested in making the "lite" template the best that it can possibly be so if you have any other suggestions or opinions please don't hesitate to let me know what they are. I hope anyone else reading this post will also make suggestions for improving it.
Thanks,
Marc Rosamond
Senior Web Developer - IMail

RE: Imail 10.x installed and working well in main mail cluster.
jerger (5/19/2008)
I don't see how ipswitch is keeping up with the times... they are missing domainkeys verification, dkim verification, bayenesian filtering... and bulk mail optimizations.. if they had these i think ipswtich would be much more competitive. Can you go into more detail about what is missing? The Rules and Calendar sections are not there but otherwise it has the same functionality as the full version.
The cgi:8383 version had a nice customizable layout where the main page had tabs at the top for search, folder list with sizes/message count and such, spell check perhaps?, personal filters and I also miss having the nice and fast admin area all built in with the user interface.

Mostly it's just still not as fast as the old cgi:8383 interface.

Also getting errors with any new users on Imail v10.x looks like I will have to downgrade back to 9.x. This is somewhat unacceptable.

The web interface tosses this error for any account created after the upgrade when trying to view an email, works fine for existing users.

If you encounter this error again, please provide the following information to your network administrator to assist in trouble-shooting.

Message:
ERROR [HY000] [Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Operation must use an updateable query.
StackTrace:
at System.Data.Odbc.OdbcConnection.HandleError(OdbcHandle hrHandle, RetCode retcode) at System.Data.Odbc.OdbcCommand.ExecuteReaderObject(CommandBehavior behavior, String method, Boolean needReader, Object[] methodArguments, SQL_API odbcApiMethod) at System.Data.Odbc.OdbcCommand.ExecuteReaderObject(CommandBehavior behavior, String method, Boolean needReader) at System.Data.Odbc.OdbcCommand.ExecuteNonQuery() at Ipswitch.Web.Mail.WgsContactSource..ctor(UserData udUser) at Ipswitch.Web.Client.PreviewMsg.LoadContactFolders() at Ipswitch.Web.Client.PreviewMsg.LoadPreviewPane(String Folder, String SequenceNumber) at Ipswitch.Web.Client.PreviewMessage.Page_Load(Object sender, EventArgs e) at System.Web.Util.CalliHelper.EventArgFunctionCaller(IntPtr fp, Object o, Object t, EventArgs e) at System.Web.Util.CalliEventHandlerDelegateProxy.Callback(Object sender, EventArgs e) at System.Web.UI.Control.OnLoad(EventArgs e) at System.Web.UI.Control.LoadRecursive() at System.Web.UI.Page.ProcessRequestMain(Boolean includeStagesBeforeAsyncPoint, Boolean includeStagesAfterAsyncPoint)

RE: Imail 10.x installed and working well in main mail cluster.

You said that the "lite" template is basically useless because several features or functionality are missing from it. Please fix this in the next release.

Imail 10.x installed and working well in main mail cluster.

I've tested and installed Imail 10.x, everything seemed to work fine in the test environment so I moved it to main mail server cluster. Again everything installed properly and It is actually working quite well.

With that being said, I do have several complaints.

Imail Installer once again messed with my folder security settings and I had to go in and fix it after in order to make it fully secured.

Note to Ipswitch: Please add an option to the installer to leave my security settings alone, I waste an hour fixing security settings after your installer goes in and messes with things.

Ok, my second grief with Imail 10.x is the web-mail does not update properly after deleting several emails. For instance when you Ctrl+Click and select several message to delete then hit delete it will delete them all but sometimes it still shows some of these emails in the box after rebuilding the page, so you have to refresh the page in order to get them to disappear.(very annoying) Perhaps it's reloading the page before it's done deleting the emails. Is there a quick fix for this?

Third grief is the "lite" web-mail interface and the only reason I upgraded. I've had clients unhappy with the speed of Imail since the "upgrade" from the old CGI version(it was super fast). So when I saw "lite" I was thinking great they finally fixed the speed and yes I do admit it's a bit faster. However, it is so lacking in features and ease of use that it's basically worthless, that seems harsh but it's the truth. My suggestion is for Ipswitch to bring back an interface like the old CGI interface but keep with the ability to run on port 80 like the current versions.

Now for the good parts:

In general it is faster and uses a bit less resources on the server cluster than the 9.x versions.

The new function to make sure users are using secure passwords I hope will save me hours of tracking down compromised accounts but how do I configure this? or is this a pre-configured thing thats part of a dll build?

I like the option to use UTF-8 in the user pref for better multilingual support. Great addition.

oh, and the new calendar looks great but it should really run in the same window or at least an option to do so for simplicity. My users hate new windows.

The Contacts area is better but still lacks an import/export feature.

I think thats about it, if you are looking to upgrade I would say go for it as soon as they fix the delete refresh issue which should be a quick and simple fix I would think.
