Cannot send email to any remote domains!

running an older version of imail and having the same problem. it seems to relate to the way the queue manager queries DNS for the MX record of the requested domain. as an example, mail drop at hotmail [yourname@hotmail.com] , should go through a series of requests. an mx request for hotmail should return

mx1.hotmail.com
mx2.hotmail.com
mx3.hotmail.com
mx4.hotmail.com

followed by an A record request for the first MX record in the list
65.54.244.136, 65.54.244.8, 65.54.245.8

if you telnet in Telnett 25, you should immediately see a 52 line banner ABANDON ALL HOPE YE WHO ENTER...type banner ( that has to have been prepared by the legal department instead of IT) , so you know the sequence has succeeded. As long as the mail drop exists, the message will be delivered.

in this case, the queue manager was attempting to deliver mail to the "A" record for the domain.

64.4.32.7, 64.4.33.7

It seems to have something to do with the fact that this production machine is behind a NAT firewall.

by adding an entry to the hosts file pointing the domain [hotmail.com] directly at the MX record, the mail is delivered immediately.

this is a fairly practical solution in this one instance, as this machine services a production website, and the only mail that is relayed is relayed for domains that have users who have purchased products. a custom library already queries the MX record at the time of purchase, so a line of script adds this to the HOSTS file. Im also thinking that we can forward to a machine that is on a public address any mail that remains undeliverable.

As this isnt the answer, just isn't 'duct tape' and wire, if anyone has any more definitive answers, please let [us] know

thanks in advance

vlg

RE: Production Issue!! Last night we converted this physical machine to a Virtual Machine and now cannot send email to ANY remote domains. Below is what's stated in the log file.

20080223 153611 127.0.0.1 SMTP (8e44015f00000002) rl-recv: connection reset
20080223 153611 127.0.0.1 SMTP (8e44015f00000002)
20080223 153611 127.0.0.1 SMTP (8e44015f00000002) Unexpected DATA response from the SMTP server on 10.11.2.26: connection dropped
20080223 153611 127.0.0.1 SMTP (8e44015f00000002) SMTP_DELIV_FAILED
20080223 153611 127.0.0.1 SMTP (8e44015f00000002) >QUIT
20080223 153611 127.0.0.1 SMTP (8e44015f00000002) [E] didn't send "QUIT
": connection reset
20080223 153611 127.0.0.1 SMTP (8e44015f00000002) rl-recv: connection reset
20080223 153611 127.0.0.1 SMTP (8e44015f00000002)
20080223 153611 127.0.0.1 SMTP (8e44015f00000002) [u] closing socket (u)

10.12.2.26 is the remote gateway where outbound email is sent through. I've also tried removing it so that it goes out directly from the server without any luck.
