I'm evaluating products for a combined syslog/event log  logging tool.

Our environment already contains WUG Gold v12 and I wanted to ask what kind of capabilities this software app has IRT to my goal of a central syslog/event log machine.

One of my concerns is the ability to offload (daily) all the logs to either Tape or DVD in a format that can be reviewed at a later time.

Thanks

WUG is not really designed to record all events/syslog information... doing this can cause the database (4GB limit, by default) to fill up rather quickly. Even if you use a full SQL server, a large DB (20+GB) can cause performance problems. WUG is designed to listen for specific event/syslog messages and notify you when they occur. I recently helped a person who used the 'Any' event monitor on 230 computers whose DB was very close to the limit. When they were removed and DB maintenance was completed, it went down to 430MB. I've heard of others who filled up the DB in less than a few weeks...

It may be possible to use an SQL query to output the events/syslog messages on a daily basis and I would suggest that once the data is saved to backup, the data also be removed from the database, so it does not cause continued growth. Maybe the removal only gets rid of data older than a week or some other time that still allows recent information to be available to WUG.
