| Nice product. It does what WhatsUp discovery processes should have done.
But, as Don says, it'd be nice if we could use this to import into Whatsup, for real testing, as I need to understand how the end product will look. I just can't use the Whatsup Discovery for my needs as it creates an absolute mess. I always go thru the painful process of building my networks on WhatsUp manually.
And yes, what is the Visio Diagram going to look like? If this is truly technical preview, where our findings and suggestions are taken into consideration before final release, then best we get that sorted on the disabled features too.
Issues I have come across so far are...
While doing an ARP discovery, I get Error messages popping up saying "Application Error: Invalid IP address string." The discovery carries on regardless; until you click [ok] on one of the error messages. Then the WhatsConnected app just quits. No questions or suicide notes. Not sure what's causing the errors. Not sure how to find out, but I can replicate it.
It cleverly identifies a PC, or any other device that has more than one interface, as a router. Ok, we all make mistakes, but it wont let me correct it. Or am I missing something here?

| | I agree with both ... 1 - WC does what we expected WUG discovery / map to do when we bought it; ... and ... 2 - We need to be able to change what WC has "discovered" to something that more accurately reflects reality. And a suggestion: Since the product claims to export to Visio, could you make it just write the .VSD file directly? Then we can move it to a PC which DOES have Visio. And if I'm just missing something, please enlighten me. Thanks! |

| | The RC1 allows for more flexibility in adding device types that may be more detailed for your environment. There have been a number of new device category mappings already added (alot for Cisco); so take a look. If we are consitently missing on a certain set of devices; please let us know and we can add the OID mappings into the next release (its a pretty simple add). On the Visio side. We have heard this request from others, and I think we are looking more at running WhatsConnected on a seperate machine (other than the WUG server) rather than creating VSD files. This direction seems to benefit other users at the same time and would allow you to run WC on a machine that would more likely have Visio installed on it. Would that fit your needs? -Brian WhatsConnected Product Team |

| | The issue I have with running WC on a different PC is that the network interrogation is then happening from a device other than the WhatsUp Server, which can cause alarms to go off with systems which monitor who's trying to contact them. And the data would then still need to be exported somehow to WUG. Am I making any sense here? |
