We would like users to try this new action type with any GSM modem.

•Please setup the following scenario using the SMS Direct action:

You need to alert 4 people via the SMS Direct action whenever one of 5 critical devices goes down. Once you have things setup, please test your settings by initiating a false down on the 5 devices, all at the same time (as though you've had some kind of major outage).
These directions are intentionally vague. Please let us know how you set up your test and what the results were.

a.How did you find the setup process?

b.Were the SMS messages received by the intended recipients?

c.Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Hello, here is a test I made. I'm using a Siemens MC35IT simbox.

A/ Setup process: Fine. The only issue I got is that in the list of COM ports, my COM1 port appears twice. At first, I created four actions and made one action policy with these.

B/ Results: Everyone did receive the messages. A few remarks on this though :

1/ Overall, it took 8 minutes for all messages to be received.

2/ The action log showed a total of 63 retries. A bit logical if you try and fire up everything at the same time, since my box can only run one call at once. But still it gives lots of clutter in the log.

3/ Messages were received quite randomly -my three colleagues received them quite quickly, I myself had to wait 3 minutes for the first sms, then the three others came during the 8th minute in rapid succession. This is most probably because of the retry stuff.

4/ I then modified my policy to have only ONE action, and input the four phone numbers. Instead of 8 minutes, it took 3.30 minutes to get all the messages -much better. Still, a strange thing was that I still saw retries in the action log, even BEFORE the first successful action.

C/ Suggestions : I think something should be done to reduce the number of retries shown in the action log.

Reading, writing and arithmetic - If you need to choose, please take option 1.

I have tried to send a sms with a connected Nokia 6310. I'm not able to send a direct sms. I have used the free serial port monitor (http://www.serial-port-monitor.com/) to see what happens.

Serial Port Monitor

Port opend by "NmConsole.exe" (PID: 3464)

41 54 45 30 51 30 56 31 0D 41 54 0D 41 54 0D 41 ATE0Q0V1.AT.AT.A
54 0D 41 54 0D 41 54 0D T.AT.AT.

Port closed

With a simple script I can send an sms:

Step (1):To set the format to text
AT+CMGF=1, then press Enter

Step (2):Set the receiver HP number
AT+CMGS="0123456789", then Enter

Step (3):Set the Message
Just key in the message then Ctrl+Z when done.

Michael,
We've found what we think is the problem based on the log you posted. We have a fix and I will try and get it to you ASAP. Can you confirm that it fixes the issue? Thanks!

Hi Jason,

the direct sms feature does not function in the final version yet. Will there be here still adaptations/changes?

Kind regards

Michael

As some of you have discovered, many of the modems out there behave differently and some are not working as of the final release. We worked hard to identify the most common ones and test with those.

There are a couple of hidden settings that you can try. They can be found here in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Ipswitch\Network Monitor\WhatsUp Plugins\Actions\ActSmsDirect
They include:
Newline - This is what is sent for CRLF.
InitString - This is the modem initialization string. The default is "ATE0Q0V1"

We will be adding support for additional modems as we get them to test with. We may ask some of you to do additional testing as well.

Thanks,

Jason
