Also, the old behavior from WS_FTP Server 5.0 where all groups were sorted ahead of users when displayed in a combined users/groups list should be brought back for any lists where the two are displayed together as I think the majority of people using the product probably use mostly groups when adding folder permissions.

Hello bhively,

Thanks for your post!

So this is related to how the groups and users are displayed in the Add Folder Permissions section - is this an accurate summary and in prioritized order?

1.) Add a toggle so the list box can be made to show the following:
a.) All groups and users with groups displayed first (alphabetically)
b.) Only groups
c.) Only users

bye for now,

Yes, that is an accurate summary.

After doing an upgrade from WS_FTP Server 5 to WS_FTP Server 6 with SSH and going to add some new folders and correct some permissions on old folders it was much more time consuming to scroll through the strictly alphabetically sorted list to find the right groups to add to the folder, especially since the search was dropping the groups from the results and only showing matching users.

So far the new product is working very well and has solved several problems which needed some, at times, tricky work-arounds, but some administrative tasks are harder because of the lack of any toggles and/or groups-first focus in lists like the one presented on the add permissions page.

Here's to hoping this will make it into the first update and that it's ready before we have to do any large scale changes to our current FTP setups.

Hello bhively,

Excellent, thanks for the feedback and glad to hear it's working well.  We are working on streamlining common tasks, either through automation or reducing the amount of clicking/scrolling that you have to do by using better information architecture, data set groupings, etc. and this one sounds like a good one.  A similar one we have heard is the ability to visually separate and group all "real" folders from virtual folders.  I'll pass on your request to Nikos, the Dir of Product Management.

btw, are you using WS_FTP Server 6.1 with SSH or 6.0?

bye for now,

Our production systems are using WS_FTP Server 6.0 with SSH. I haven't had time to update to the test release of 6.1 on our test system so far. I can see the separation of physical and virtual folders for someone with a large physical FTP site, but for our purposes we use strictly virtual folders so it's not an issue we'll run into with our current servers.

Hi,

I've recently installed the preview of WS_FTP Server 6.1 and the UI issues for managing permissions are still present, do you think these changes will make it into the final release because it really does complicate the process of setting up permissions on our FTP servers which make heavy use of groups against a relatively large AD database.

If not all of the enhancements could make it into the release at the very least making the search box query both groups and users instead of users only when adding permissions to folders would help out a lot.

Thanks,
Brian
